In addition, these websites also contain other types of affordable accomodation. The other thing to consider is the distance from the city centre as you will have to either walk ( which will take a while) or pay for transport ( which is usually not too bad but its there and it takes time)so try and add that in your mind….if you have limited time then pay a bit extra for a more central location.
The other thing is that some cities are going to be more pricey..eg I found Florence and Venice more pricey than some other places.
I have not been to Berlin but I have had it reccommended to me or Milan…. I have heard the latter is not that great apart from the cathedral and that a day is all thats needed there.
Amsterdam was lovely but smaller than I thought as was Venice ( eg you could easily walk around Venice several times in a day!)
I loved Paris and Rome had lots to offer. I had 5 days in Paris and still had things to do!!!!
Here are some other websites on the same vein as before…forgetting which one was listed:
http://www.hostels.com
http://www.hostelworld.com
http://www.hostelbookers.com
http://www.lonelyplanet.com
Also for something else maybe try the odd day tour…this way you can go to some places further out or serval places over a day ( normally include lunch) and you meet people as travelling alone can be lonely ( although in hostels you meet lots of good people) ..I did them to places like Pompeii ( from Rome) which was good for me ( and you can add things like Sorrento as well), or to Versailles from Paris ( half day) or to Cesky Krumulov from Prague ( which was wonderful…both are!!)….the guides are usually very good and give you local info or info that you don;t need to read etc…quicker access into places ( rather than waiting forever to get into places) and you don;t have to worry about getting there and back.
look at something like http://www.viator.com hmm I think something like http://www.octopus.com and I think lonelyplanet and the hostel websites also have things like that so have a look.
